Central Florida’s postseason ban leaves C-USA East division wide-open

Central Florida was hit with severe sanctions by the NCAA on Tuesday for major recruiting violations in its football and men’s basketball programs.

UCF received a one-year postseason ban for both programs, meaning the Knights will not be allowed to compete in the Conference USA football championship game or men’s basketball tournament. The school was also cited for a “lack of institutional control,” placed on five-year probation and fined $50,000.

What does this mean for the upcoming football season?

UCF was the overwhelming favorite to win the Conference USA East division in a preseason media poll released last week. Southern Miss was a distant pick to finish second, followed by Marshall and East Carolina as teams expected to have legitimate shots at the title.

Houston was the pick to win a tightly-bunched West division, edging out Tulsa and SMU.

UCF will join Houston, SMU and Memphis in leaving for the Big East in 2013.
